Final thoughts on Marseille

Wrote this last night, but posting now...

Perhaps I jinxed it, but unfortunately, we did not make it back to the hotel unscathed. We avoided the sketchy streets south of the main road Canabiere, but saw a street on the northern side that ran parallel to La Canabiere that looked lively, with a movie theatre and lots of people mingling outside an Irish pub. So we walked down that road. The second half of the street was not as lively, but there were a couple of boys playing outside and a guy on a motorbike talking on the phone. Since it was just half a block to the next intersection, we kept going. Passed the motorbike with no problems. We kept walking. Now there was just one of the boys standing casually next to some parked cars. As we approached, he called upstairs to his friend. Five seconds later, we are splashed from above with liquid in our hair and on our faces. Great. I just hope it wasn't anything other than water. Needless to say, we rushed back to the hotel to shower. On the way back, the wind also carried whiffs of public urination, further compounding the situation.
It kind of ruined our night and our impression of Marseille. I suppose it has given us a more well-rounded view of the city beyond the beautified/sanitized area immediately around Vieux Port. Charming as the nice areas are, the rest of the city has a ways to go before it can be called a true destination.
