Venice Transportation

I have to say, though we were initially horrified by the price, we
really got a lot of use out of those €23 36-hour vaporetto and bus
passes. We rode the vaporetto to our hotel and to San Marco square the
first day, then did a back and forth sightseeing journey on the No. 1
(local) - super fun, especially if you can find the kind of boat where
you can sit in the bow. Hey, it's no gondola but it's also much
cheaper :).

Today we rode the vaporetto to the rail station to do the Lonely
Planet walking tour, and then back again from San Marco. Now we rode
the No. 2 (express) vaporetto to Piazzale Roma where we picked up the
No. 5 bus to the airport (not mentioned in the Lonely Planet, perhaps
it's new). The bus travel is also included in the unlimited travel
cards... In short, boat transportation is expensive, plus you are in
the most expensive city in Italy, so fork over the cash for a
transportation pass and enjoy the ride!
